The Washington Football Team will be no more in two days. The NFL’s Washington franchise will reveal its new name and logo Wednesday morning as part of NBC’s Today Show broadcast.
There has been a great deal of speculation on what the new name will be. But it’s becoming increasingly evident that the new name is the worst-kept secret in Washington.
Washington Commanders have surfaced as the choice. Fans have been digging for clues and signs. On Monday there was a new layer placed down that could spoil the suspense.
Appearing on the Damon Amendolara Show on CBS Sports Radio, former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann may have just spilled the beans on Commanders being the new name.
“I think the Commanders is a name that is going to be hopefully one that people will talk about going forward,” Theismann told Amendolara.
Theismann was asked if he likes the Commanders as the new name?
“I mean, there were so many different options, but once again, you know, it’s trademark infringement,” Theismann replied. “It’s getting approval from different people. It’s you, know if you choose a name, is there a group out there that isn’t going to like it? I mean, there’s so many things that you have to consider.
“Commander basically, it’s Washington, DC a lot of commanders in Washington, DC in the Pentagon and a lot of different branches of the service and so to me, that’s sort of the way I’m looking at it as a positions of leadership when it comes to the naming,” Theismann continued.
Theismann’s comments come a week after a fan discovered commanders.com was transferred to an internet hosting company that has a deep relationship with the NFL. That includes hosting 25 of the league’s 32 official team websites.
There’s also the leaked image of the Commanders’ shield sitting on the arm of the chair in which Washington team president Jason Wright sat during a hype video.
Surely, Washington fans differ in opinion about the Commanders as the potential new name. Some are holding out hope that the team’s brass is doing a great job of misdirecting the public to keep the new name under wrap.
Maybe it’s the team’s way of doing a soft reveal to lessen the pushback when the Commanders are officially revealed?
Maybe Theismann was presuming that the name will be Commanders? But considering his stature with the organization. He’s one of the franchise’s greatest quarterbacks so you’d think he got a whiff of the new name.
We know Washington legendary coach Joe Gibbs and fellow quarterback legend Doug Williams know the name. So, it’s not far-fetched that Theismann knows and just spilled it on the radio.
