The Washington Commanders have re-signed kicker Joey Slye to a two-year deal worth up to $5 million with $2 million in guarantees, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Commanders announced the re-signing shortly after reports surfaced.
Joey Slye stabilized the Commanders’ kicking game last season.
Washington released their longtime kicker Dustin Hopkins after early season struggles. Chris Blewitt replaced Hopkins, but Blewitt’s two-game stint was a disaster.
Slye joined Washington in November. He had played two his first two seasons in the league with the Carolina Panthers. The first year was under Commanders head coach Ron Rivera.
Last season, the Virginia Tech product kicked in games for the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers, filling in for injured kickers prior to landing in Washington.
In six games with Washington, he was a perfect 12-of-12 on field goal attempts. He also was 9-of-10 on extra points. He suffered a hamstring injury in a Week 11 game against the Seattle that sidelined him three games. But he returned and didn’t miss a beat in the final three games of the season.
Between the three teams he made 23-of-25 field goals and 18-of-22 extra points in 2021. Now he will get the opportunity to build on that success in Washington.
