Commanders reportedly make QB decision for Week 18

The Washington Commanders have benched quarterback Carson Wentz and will turn back to Taylor Heinicke, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Heinicke expects to start Sunday in Washington’s season finale against the Dallas Cowboys. However, rookie and fifth-round draft pick Sam Howell will also play in the game.

Many Commanders fans and media have clamored for Howell to get the opportunity to start with Washington eliminated from playoff contention. Yet, the Commanders are tabbing Heinicke to take the first snaps of the game. Wentz will be inactive for the game.

Heinicke started nine games while Wentz was injured with a broken finger. Heinicke’s run sparked the Commanders to win five of his first six starts. However, the team simmered down, going 0-2-1 in his last three starts. Wentz became healthy, leading to Heinicke’s benching.

The Commanders turned to Wentz last week with a chance to keep their playoff hopes alive against the Cleveland Browns. Yet, Wentz threw three interceptions, and the Commanders lost 24-10, leading to their elimination.

Washington went 2-5 in Carson Wentz’s seven starts this season. With Wentz on the way out after just one season, the Commanders are back to square one in their quarterback search.

The Commanders are in desperate need of a long-term quarterback. The draft may not be an option, not with a Day 1 pick having a 7-8-1 record. Thus, the intrigue on Howell is high. Many want to see if he has the potential to be a late-round gem. But questions remain because he hasn’t played.

Sunday will be Howell’s chance. Albeit not in a start like fans prefer. Nonetheless, Wentz’s future in Washington is sealed. The team can release him with no cap penalty. But will Heinicke or Howell show enough in the season finale to remain in the team’s plans next season?
