More than a week ago, it appeared Washington Commanders defensive backs coach Chris Harris was headed to the Tennessee Titans in what is considered a lateral move. However, Harris sets to interview with another team for defensive coordinator.
According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, Harris is one of three candidates the San Francisco 49ers plan to interview to replace DeMeco Ryans as defensive coordinator. Ryans was hired Tuesday as the Houston Texans’ head coach.
Former Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks and Vic Fangio, who the Miami Dolphins plan to hire as their defensive coordinator, will also interview with the 49ers.
Harris is still a candidate to become the Chicago Bears’ secondary coach and passing game coordinator, per Anderson. Harris had two stints as a player with the Bears and one as an assistant coach.
Last week, it was reported the Titans planned to hire Harris as a cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
Chris Harris has been with Washington for the past three seasons. He arrived in Washington in 2020 following the hire of head coach Ron Rivera. The Commanders’ secondary has blossomed under Harris. He’s been credited largely with the development of young cornerback Benjamin St-Juste, and safeties Kamren Curl and Darrick Forrest.
This season, the Commanders finished fourth in passing yards allowed.
But there is uncertainty surrounding Washington. Rivera is entering Year 4 without a winning season. The Commanders appear to be up for sale. A new owner may result in a new head coach and coaching staff. Thus, Harris’ potential departure is likely.
The respect for Harris is laminated by multiple teams’ interest in him. The news isn’t good for the Commanders, who seem likely to lose an instrumental part in the team’s defensive success. Washington’s potential loss will be either Tennessee, Chicago, or San Francisco’s gain.
