Long-time Redskins long snapper Nick Sundberg was placed on injured reserve Saturday, as he will undergo surgery on his back. Simple headline, however, the situation is not that simple for Sundberg.

Shortly after news broke of Sundberg’s season ending, he took to Twitter to explain the severity of his injury. In the statement, he explained that he has taken five epidurals over the last year to combat pain for herniated and bulging discs.

Sundberg also mentioned he risked permanent damage and loss of mobility had he continued to play this season without the surgery that is scheduled for Tuesday. It’s another reminder of the hardships a player goes through to play football.

The Redskins signed Andrew East to replace Sundberg. He played well for the most part in Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kicker Dustin Hopkins made two field goals, including the game-winner as time expired from 36 yards out. The punt unit had it’s struggle as one of Tress Way’s punts were nearly blocked and the Jaguars scored on a 74-yard return.

Yet, the Redskins got the win and while they’ll miss Sundberg, he must get his health in order before he can return to the field. As he hopes to recover and get back to the team before next season, this is the second season of a four year deal for him. He is due to make $930,000 while accounting for a $1.082 million cap hit for the 2019 season.
