A lot was made of the head coaches Sunday’s NFC Championship Game being former Washington Redskins assistants. However, lost was the fact the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs featured two former Redskins cornerbacks.
Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller are headed to the Super Bowl. Their NFL journey both started with the Redskins.
Redskins cornerback Quinton Dunbar congratulated his two former teammates on punching their ticket to the Super Bowl.
Fuller, a 2016 third-round pick of Washington, was a promising slot corner with the Redskins with Bleacher Report dubbing him the top slot corner in 2017. Surprisingly, the Redskins traded Fuller to the Chiefs along with a third-round pick for quarterback Alex Smith the ensuing off-season. Fuller spent just two seasons with the Redskins.
Fuller was solid in 2018 with the Chiefs, but this season battled through a thumb injury that sidelined him five games. However, since his return, the Chiefs defense has been strong as ever, especially against the pass, only allowing more than 258 passing yards once since his return in Week 13.
Breeland, a 2014 fourth-round pick of Washington, spent four seasons with the Redskins. His strong play tapered off towards the end of his rookie contract. He initially signed with the Carolina Panthers as a free agent in 2018, however, a failed physical voided his contract.
He landed in Green Bay after he healed from a cut on his foot that became infected and led to his failed physical. After a disappointing season with the Packers, he signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs.
Breeland started 15 games in the regular season for the Chiefs and has been integral part in the defense’s resurgence.
Now, the castoffs Breeland and Fuller will head to Miami to face former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.
