Former Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins has new NFL team

Former Washington Football Team kicker Dustin Hopkins has a new home in the NFL, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday.

Hopkins was released by Washington last week after nearly seven seasons with the team. He had become a mainstay in Washington’s special teams. But, he struggled in 2020, missing six kicks of 40 or more yards.

Last season, he made a career-low 79.4% of his field goal attempts.

Still, Hopkins was cemented as the kicker for the 2021 season. Unfortunately, his struggles continued. He missed two extra points in Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons. He also missed two field goals, each beyond 40 yards, including a 42-yard attempt in Week 6 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The miss against the Chiefs was the final straw, as Washington let him go and signed Chris Blewitt to replace him.

Dustin Hopkins kicked 93 games for Washington. He converted 163-of-194 field goals. But was 14-of-27 from 50 yards or more. He made 179-of-190 extra points. Now he’ll begin a new journey in Los Angeles for Brandon Staley’s team.
