Angel Reese is latest Maryland star to enter transfer portal

What’s going on within the Maryland women’s basketball program? In a day’s time three players have now entered the transfer portal. First star point guard Ashley Owusu. Then reserve Taisiya Kozlova. Now, add star forward Angel Reese.

Reese has entered the transfer portal Tuesday evening. The news is an even larger shock than Owusu.

Like Owusu, Reese came to Maryland as a five-star recruit. Reese was the No. 2 player in the nation behind only Paige Bueckers of Connecticut.

Angel Reese led Maryland with 17.8 points and 10.6 rebounds this past season. She earned AP third-team All-American honors. She had emerged as the go-to option within the Brenda Frese offense.

Additionally, reserve guard Channise Lewis is also entering the transfer portal, according to Testudo Times’ Ben Dickson. Lewis played nine games in 2020-21 before suffering a torn ACL. She did not play this past season due to “some unexpected challenges in my rehab process over the past year.”

Maryland entered the season ranked fourth in the nation. Injuries staggered the season, but the Terrapins reached the Sweet 16 before losing to Stanford.

The Terps appeared to set for another run as one of the best teams in the nation next season. But now Coach Frese has lost her top two scorers in Reese and Owusu and two reserves.

In the era of the transfer portal and NIL’s, Maryland has been dealt a huge blow.
