Commanders TE Logan Thomas (calf) reportedly expected to play against Colts

The Washington Commanders may be getting a notable return to its offense. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Washington’s tight end Logan Thomas is expected to play Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

Thomas missed the past three games with a calf injury. Coming off a torn ACL in December, Thomas started the season in Week 1, playing in the first four games. However, his calf injury has kept him out of the lineup since Week 4 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Thomas’s return is much-needed. The Commanders are starting backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke for the second straight game in place of the injured Carson Wentz. Washington will be without rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson for the fourth consecutive game with a hamstring injury.

Rookie tight end Cole Turner, who replaced Thomas as the starter, will be out against the Colts after having a concussion in last week’s win over the Green Bay Packers.

Thomas could provide a safety net for Heinicke. He has 13 catches for 106 yards and a touchdown in four games this season.

Thomas can serve as a complement for wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel. The Commanders’ offense has missed a consistent third target with Thomas and Dotson out of the lineup.

Last week against the Packers, McLaurin, and Samuel split 16 targets, each coming down with five catches, combining for 126 yards and a touchdown by McLaurin. No other Commanders pass catcher had over 28 yards — undrafted rookie tight end Armani Rogers — although running back Antonio Gibson caught a touchdown.
