Darrell Green: Dwayne Haskins needs to overcome ‘arrogance’

Washington’s legendary cornerback Darrell Green would love to see Dwayne Haskins become the team’s starting quarterback again. However, the Hall of Famer believes Haskins needs to do some self-assessment to get back on track.

“I’m on record to say that that kid had if anything he had a problem with arrogance, just being arrogant and maybe overconfident,” Green told ABC-7’s Scott Abraham. “And I thought if he could get those other non-football issues straight he probably could play football pretty good.”

Haskins was demoted from starter to third-string after a Week 4 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The benching appeared to signal the 23-year old had fallen out of favor with head coach Ron Rivera. A report followed that bad study and practice habits contributed to his benching. He had been inactive for each of the four games following.

Since then Haskins has had to withstand the notion of a bad attitude and work ethics, whether fair or not. A series of events seemingly fueled the narrative against him.

He did not attend the first game since the benching due to an illness. The illness also kept him from practicing much of the ensuing week. He was cleared in time to travel with the team ahead of their Week 6 game at the New York Giants. However, he was later fined by Washington for violating the team’s COVID-19 protocols. Haskins booked a room for a family friend at the team hotel.

Aside from that, he has been trying to get in good grace with Rivera and dispel the negativity against him. He reportedly has been putting in extra film study and working out with Washington receivers outside of practice.

“I hope they give him the chance. I hope he gets another chance to do it again,” Green added. “I’d just love to see the kid back in there. It’s got to be painful.”

Haskins may be inching closer to a return to the field. He was elevated to backup quarterback to Alex Smith following an ankle injury to Kyle Allen, who replaced Haskins as the starter. With Allen expected to be out for the rest of the year, Haskins is now one snap away from getting back on the field.
