Maryland QB Josh Jackson among six Terps opting out of 2020 season

Maryland head coach Mike Locksley announced six Terrapins players have opted out of playing the 2020 season due to concerns of COVID-19, including quarterback Josh Jackson.

Starting offensive linemen Austin Fontaine and Johnny Jordan, defensive end Jalen Alexander, defensive back Vincent Flythe and linebacker TJ Kautai also opted out of the season.

Jackson joined Maryland in 2019 as a grad transfer from Virginia Tech. He was the primary starting quarterback, appearing in 10 games. He completed 47.3% of his passes for 1,246 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Jackson most likely has played his last game with Maryland. He will continue his academic career at Maryland, according to Locksley.

Maryland now has one scholarship quarterback

With Jackson out, redshirt sophomore Lance LeGendre is the lone scholarship quarterback. LeGendre has attempted three passes during his college career. He joined Maryland as a four-star recruit out of New Orleans.

Maryland is still awaiting word from the NCAA on a waiver request for Alabama transfer Taulia Tagovailoa. Locksley expects a decision in the coming days.

Starting TE Chigoziem Okonkwo will miss 2020 season

Starting tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo will miss the 2020 season for undisclosed medical reasons, Locksley announced.

Okonkwo was on the John Mackey Award preseason watch list. His absence will make an already thin tight end group thinner for Maryland. Redshirt freshman Malik Jackson is the only scholarship tight end remaining.

Earlier this week, Maryland announced defensive end Tyler Baylor and lienbacker Kameron Blount were moved to tight end to start camp.
