The Ultimate Week 6 College Football Top 25 Rankings Based on Pure Analytics

Throw out the preseason polls, ignore the brand logos on the helmets, and turn off the “eye test.”

Through five weeks of college football, traditional polling has once again fallen victim to poll inertia—punishing teams for playing brutal schedules while rewarding mediocre programs for surviving cupcakes. At DC Sports King, we don’t believe in phantom rankings or narrative-driven ballots. By Week 6, we finally have enough on-field data to build an unapologetically objective Top 25.

Our Power Rankings are powered by a strict six-pillar formula designed to measure both what teams have accomplished and where they are headed:

  • Strength of Record (SOR): How difficult is it for an average Top 25 team to achieve a program’s current record against their specific schedule?
  • Strength of Schedule (SOS): Evaluating who you beat—not just whether you won.
  • Game Control & Net Points Per Drive: Measuring wire-to-wire dominance and drive-by-drive efficiency instead of empty blowout margins in garbage time.
  • Quality Wins & Bad Losses: High mathematical rewards for neutral plus road victories over Top 50 teams, and heavy penalties for dropping games you should dominate.
  • Head-to-Head Decisiveness: The ultimate tiebreaker when resumes are within decimal points of each other.
  • Playoff Predictability: Forward-looking FPI and College Football Playoff probability models that project who can actually reach the 12-team field and survive.

From Texas and Georgia establishing early dominance to dark horses turning efficiency models upside down, here is the real, unvarnished Top 25 entering Week 6.

The Elite Tier: Complete Resumes & Playoff Locks

1. Texas Longhorns (4-0)

  • The Metrics: #1 in Strength of Record. Elite Quality Wins (vs. Ohio State, at Tennessee). Strong Playoff Predictability (-700 CFP odds).
  • The Verdict: Texas owns the best resume in college football. The Longhorns have the ultimate trump card with a head-to-head win over Ohio State, and taking down Tennessee in Knoxville proves they can control games in hostile SEC environments.

2. Georgia Bulldogs (5-0)

  • The Metrics: -950 CFP Odds. Elite Game Control.
  • The Verdict: The Bulldogs continue to humiliate opponents, most recently blasting Vanderbilt 38-14. They haven’t faced a resume-defining test yet, but their sheer dominance in Net Points Per Drive and their forward-looking predictability metrics make them a near-lock for the top seed.

3. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-0)

  • The Metrics: #4 Strength of Record. #1 in Playoff Predictability (-3000 CFP odds).
  • The Verdict: Notre Dame is quietly executing one of the most efficient seasons in the country. They already hold double-digit wins over Wisconsin, Michigan State, Purdue, and North Carolina. With a highly favorable remaining schedule, the analytical models heavily favor them to run the table.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-0)

  • The Metrics: #2 Strength of Record. -400 CFP Odds.
  • The Verdict: Alabama’s resume is aging beautifully. They handled South Carolina and just hung 56 points on the road against a Mississippi State team that was previously 4-0. Their Game Control metrics are elite, setting up a massive showdown with Georgia.

5. Ohio State Buckeyes (4-1)

  • The Metrics: #1 in ESPN FPI. Quality Win (vs. Iowa).
  • The Verdict: If this were based purely on predictive metrics, Ohio State would be #1. Their defense absolutely smothered Iowa, allowing just 39 rushing yards. However, the head-to-head loss to Texas and the fact that they have a loss at all keeps them at #5 under our objective criteria.

The Contender Tier: Unbeaten with Room to Prove

6. Miami Hurricanes (5-0)

  • The Metrics: Elite CFP Odds (-1500). Quality Win (at Clemson).
  • The Verdict: The Hurricanes just walked into Death Valley and throttled Clemson 41-13. Mark Fletcher’s ground game and a dominant defense show excellent Game Control. Their predictive metrics suggest they are heavy favorites to win the ACC.

7. Indiana Hoosiers (5-0)

  • The Metrics: -390 CFP Odds. Elite Net Points Per Drive.
  • The Verdict: The defending champs are methodically dismantling opponents. A 47-15 blowout over Rutgers featured 326 rushing yards. Their SOS lags behind the SEC powers, but they control games wire-to-wire.

8. BYU Cougars (4-0)

  • The Metrics: +200 CFP Odds. Zero Bad Losses.
  • The Verdict: BYU is the top Big 12 team on the board right now. Their efficiency is high, and predictive models like their chances of securing a first-round bye as a conference champion.

9. Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-0)

  • The Metrics: +120 CFP Odds. Undefeated Resume.
  • The Verdict: The Red Raiders are executing at a high level. Without a bad loss and a very favorable schedule ahead, their Playoff Predictability score is surging.

10. Utah Utes (4-0)

  • The Metrics: +125 CFP Odds. Elite Defensive Efficiency.
  • The Verdict: Giving up just 10.25 points per game, Utah’s defensive game control is phenomenal. They need a marquee Quality Win, but the resume is spotless so far.

The Best of the Rest (11-25)

These teams have either suffered a loss that dings their Strength of Record or lack the Quality Wins and Playoff Predictability to crack the top 10.

11. LSU Tigers (4-1) – High predictability (-115 CFP odds), but lack the zero in the loss column.

12. Ole Miss Rebels (3-1) – Still highly rated in FPI and CFP odds (+150), but a loss holds their SOR back.

13. Oregon Ducks (3-1) – Excellent predictive metrics (-105 CFP odds), but resume lacks volume.

14. Missouri Tigers (4-1) – Huge Quality Win over Florida (45-17), punishing the Gators for 560 yards of offense.

15. Tennessee Volunteers (4-1) – Only loss is to our #1 team (Texas); solid SOR.

16. Florida Gators (4-1) – Suffered a Bad Loss on the road to Mizzou, plummeting their Game Control rating.

17. Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-1) – Getting blown out by Alabama hurts, but their SOR remains buoyed by early road wins.

18. Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-1) – Need to stack wins in the Big 12 to improve predictive odds.

19. USC Trojans (5-1) – Volume of wins is high, but defensive efficiency metrics still cause some hesitation.

20. Iowa Hawkeyes (4-1) – The offense remains a massive liability in Game Control and Net Points Per Drive, exposed by Ohio State.

21. UCLA Bruins (4-0) – Undefeated, but SOS is dragging down their overall profile.

22. Houston Cougars (4-1) – Solid analytical profile keeps them in the Top 25.

23. Boise State Broncos (4-1) – The top Group of Five team in Playoff Predictability (+140 odds).

24. SMU Mustangs (4-1) – Sneaking in with strong offensive efficiency.

25. Pitt Panthers (5-0) – Undefeated resume forces them into the Top 25 despite weaker SOS.
