Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa granted transfer waiver to play immediately

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has been granted transfer waiver by the NCAA. Tagovailoa is immediately eligible to play at Maryland.

Tagovailoa announced his transfer from Alabama to Maryland in May. His family’s relationship with Maryland head coach Mike Locksley played a huge factor. Locksley was Alabama’s offensive coordinator from 2017-2019.

The younger brother of Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa will compete with redshirt sophomore Lance Legendre for the starting position.

His addition softens the blow left by Josh Jackson’s absence. Earlier Friday, Locksley announced Jackson was one of six players who opted out of playing this season due to concerns of COVID-19.

Tagovailoa and Legendre are Maryland’s only two scholarship QBs heading into the season.

Taulia Tagovailoa appeared in three games last season as a freshman for Alabama. He completed 9-of-12 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown. Legendre has only attempted three passes in his collegiate career.
