With the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline looming, the Washington Commanders’ season seemed on the line in Week 8’s Sunday Night Football clash against the Philadelphia Eagles. Some pundits believed head coach Dan Quinn could be on his last leg, and a loss to an injury-depleted Eagles roster could prove catastrophic.
On the opening kickoff, the team seemed to understand the gravity of the game. Embattled wide receiver Luke McCaffrey broke off a 44-yard return to the 50-yard line, and the offense moved the ball smoothly to the Eagles’ 27-yard line.
Washington had Philadelphia on its heels. A defensive penalty gave the Commanders a favorable 3rd-and-1, but back-to-back false starts pushed the offense back 10 yards without even snapping the football. The first was a rare false start called against quarterback Jayden Daniels, who rocked right just before the snap. Star right guard Sam Cosmi was flagged for the second infraction.
Just like that, the Commanders faced a 3rd-and-11 from the 37-yard line.
Missed Opportunities and Growing Frustrations
To make matters worse, the penalties kept Washington off the scoreboard. After Daniels threw an incomplete pass intended for wide receiver Stefon Diggs, rookie placekicker Drew Stevens missed a 55-yard field goal attempt. The kick went badly wide right, leaving the game scoreless.
Despite excellent starting field position, the Commanders stumbled due to self-inflicted miscues. The stalled drive—and how it happened—adds fuel to the fire of recent struggles for Daniels and the Washington offense. Between the overtime clock management debacle against the Giants, Daniels’ fourth-down throwaway against the 49ers, and now back-to-back false starts, these unforced errors are becoming unforgivable.
To add insult to injury, tight end Chig Okonkwo fumbled a completed pass two drives later, setting up a Saquon Barkley touchdown. Before the first quarter ended, the Commanders had already fallen into a 10-0 hole.
