Washington Commanders fans caught a glimpse of the defense’s future on Sunday in Philadelphia.
Rookie linebacker Sonny Styles made an immediate, physical impact in his NFL debut during Washington’s 24-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The 21-year-old first-round pick displayed the elite athleticism and imposing power that made him the seventh overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Sonny Styles Makes Statement First Sack
The defining moment of the afternoon came courtesy of Styles’ first career NFL sack. Lined up as a blitzer, Styles found himself matched up against Eagles running back Saquon Barkley in pass protection. Despite Barkley’s reputation as one of the most physical running backs in the sport, the rookie linebacker ran straight through him, bulldozing the veteran to the turf before taking down quarterback Jalen Hurts for a six-yard loss.
The physicality did not stop there. Styles showcased his sideline-to-sideline range and block-shedding ability when he beat Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson, blowing up a rushing play to drop Barkley in the backfield for a three-yard loss. Finishing the game with four combined tackles, a sack, and two tackles for loss, Styles proved he can be a disruptive force on an NFL field.
Rookie Growing Pains
However, the debut wasn’t without growing pains. Late in the fourth quarter, the Eagles faced a critical offensive possession. Jalen Hurts checked out of the called play at the line of scrimmage with just seconds remaining on the play clock. Tight end Dallas Goedert shifted laterally, causing confusion across the Washington defense.
Caught off guard by the late movement, Styles was seen pointing at Goedert in anticipation of a false start flag. The play remained live, and Styles lost sight of the tight end, allowing Goedert to slip past him for a 43-yard catch-and-run touchdown that would ultimately secure the 24-22 victory for Philadelphia.
Despite the costly miscommunication on the decisive touchdown, Styles’ debut offered significant promise. The combination of raw power, speed, and aggression makes the former Ohio State standout a foundational piece for the Washington Commanders’ defense moving forward.
