Daylen Lile Is the Hometown Hero Again in Nats win

For the second consecutive night, 23-year-old outfielder Daylen Lile proved why playing close to home brings out his best. The Louisville, Kentucky native—playing just down the river from where he grew up and with his father in the stands—was the undisputed hero.

With the game tied 6-6 in the top of the 10th inning, Lile stepped up to the plate against Reds reliever Tony Santillan with automatic runner CJ Abrams on second base. With one out, Lile launched a 409-foot, go-ahead two-run home run into the right-center field bleachers. The clutch blast was his third home run in just two games at Great American Ball Park and his sixth of the season. He finished the night 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, a run scored, and a sacrifice fly.

Game Recap & Key Turning Points

The First Inning: Cincinnati Strikes Early

The game started as a nightmare for the Nationals. Reds starter Nick Lodolo took the mound, while Washington countered with Jake Irvin. The Reds’ offense exploded out of the gate, sending nine men to the plate in the bottom of the first.

  • JJ Bleday drove in Elly De La Cruz with an RBI double to open the scoring.
  • Following back-to-back walks to Spencer Steer and Nathaniel Lowe to load the bases, Tyler Stephenson crushed a grand slam to center field.
  • Score after 1st: Reds 5, Nationals 0.

The Second & Third Innings: The Nationals Answer Back

Washington refused to fold, immediately chipping away at the deficit against Lodolo, who struggled in his second start back from a blister injury.

  • Top 2nd: Joey Wiemer roped an RBI double to score Jacob Young. Moments later, catcher Keibert Ruiz launched a two-run homer to pull Washington within one.
  • Top 3rd: The Nationals tied the game at 5-5 after Joey Wiemer drew a bases-loaded walk.
  • Bottom 3rd: Cincinnati quickly regained the lead, making it 6-5 after a throwing error by Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams allowed a run to score.

The Middle Innings: The Grinding Tie

The bullpens took over and stabilized the game. The Nationals managed to draw even once more in the top of the 6th inning when Luis García Jr. hit an RBI grounder, locking the game at 6-6. Nationals reliever Gus Varland pitched a high-wire, scoreless bottom of the 9th inning—despite giving up a leadoff double to Matt McLain—to send the game into extra innings.

The 10th Inning: Bizarre Finishes and Heartbreak for the Reds

After Lile’s two-run heroics put Washington up 8-6, the Reds came to bat in the bottom of the 10th against Nationals closer PJ Poulin, refusing to go quietly.

  • With automatic runner Sal Stewart on second, Spencer Steer hit a deep line drive to left field.
  • In a bizarre twist, a fan reached over the outfield wall to catch the ball. Following a crew-chief review, the play was ruled spectator interference. Steer was awarded an RBI double, bringing the score to 8-7.
  • With the tying run on base, Poulin walked Tyler Stephenson but got Blake Dunn to ground out to secure the final out of the game.
